Livicated to Aunty Bonnie and the Reyes fam.
Saturday was “Hawai’i gets Kavet the Catalyst to dj day”. First up Koko Marina Skate Ramp Jam 3.
Matt and the Local808 crew hold a super sick event with a dope mini ramp and street course. Lots of prizes and giveaways. A sample sale from some skate/surf brands. Dopeness. Check out their web page at http://local808.net
Kavet got invited to spin hiphop for the keikis and the Eastside community. Teach um young. Let the kid’s skate!
The sponsored skaters not judging the comp. Technoskater and Park win for worst spill and best trick in that order.
Technoskater guns proved Darkstar armorlite is LEGIT!
My favorite part of any skate contest. Product toss. Chris having fun. The only SWAG I like. No hipster shit. Strait free giveaways for just showing up! Stickers is also a fav of mine. Thanks LRG! Livicated Jonas! And Vitaminwater! That new blue drink is winnas!
Good contest. Packed it up and headed home for a little down time before we roll again.
Next stop Waimea Valley. My friend Amelia getting married. Honozooloo taking pics. KTC asked to spin dope hiphop and a music selection from the bridal couple. Word.
It’s electric! BOOGIEWOOGIEWOOGIE! HAHA. Oh what KTC rocks Serato? Nope. But you think his collection gonna have electric slide on wax? You got electric slide on wax? I don’t got it on wax. But hey you get a list of stuff the wedding couple wants and you gotta make it happen. Itunes, cdj, turntables, and a mixer with a broken transformer switch and he held his own.
You shoulda heard the requests from the crowd. “People wanna dance, play beatles!” “you got this band? its mainstream. its alternative indie rock.” “Dougie please?” “No dougie, the lyrics are offensive!”. Pure comedy to me, but they don’t know.
Not one Filipino in sight, yet they held their own with the ChaCha song.
Last ten minutes and I hear KTC say “ah crap! Let’s do this!” starts diggin in the crates and strait to good underground hiphop. Bush babies, tribe, mos def, camp lo, just rockin. Guess what. The wedding party loved it. They danced. KTC played 30 minutes past the ending of the wedding. The bus for the guests to Waikiki left, and they still danced. The waitstaff loved it as they broke down the venue. The wedding party wanted KTC to go drink with them back at the hotel. Good party. Good people.
Congrats to Amelia and Tony!
Next stop Zippy’s.
The one thing I love about lofa is a sexy beast, ktc’s blog, and atypicalliving.com is that they HELLA BIASED!!!! I gonna put what I want where I want it, especially here. Lofa Says (livicated 808 Scene Zine) used to be just me rehashing what Mr. J all Day put up on aL.com, but that was just the stuff me and him like…if we didn’t like it we didn’t put it up there. Lofa is a Sexy Beast is me brain farting.
Now back to the title. I wanted to do a review of the new Contrast and what I liked, maybe grow balls and say what I didn’t but in Hawaii you just can’t state your piece and not offend ten people (the target and his or her family, cousins, lover, etc.). Now I was gonna review the new mag same way Ghostface (read it here! HAM!) and the rest of the peanut gallery did that Kanye/Jay Z Watch The Thrown album (I download but no listen yet) but then I realized I usually review Contrasts issues. So much for that idea. No fern gully fairy anthems here. Begin. From front to back, not in particular order of favorites or whatever.
The New Vintage issue 06
-In4mation ad- If I found ledge like that would i try? I gotta use that lomo camera I got with the 8 pics at a time
-Contrast got interns? I still never make the sticker bombing crew yet…..
-Solitary arts “Curb Theif!”-legit
-Jeff Canham letters are dope
-Indigo article reminds me of this Chinese movie my girl watched where the uncle was oofing his niece(she was old not keiki) in a cave because he was drunk and died cus he couldn’t breathe in the cave and she tossed him into a silk dying pool and burned down the silk factory and the movie just pau. Japan Blue article is cool! no relation between the two, just reminded me….
-EZ Ryder-know your history. I didn’t. I started Bones Brigade times. Couldn’t olie then, can’t now! Mongo!
-Cuzzo-sick idea redo the cover. How come Skate Nazi didn’t get contributors spot?
-Kuha’o ethnic. I not gonna wear a malo till I can win Paradise Cup bodybuilding contest, hence why I no like dance hula. But kanes should dance hula and ‘oli!
-DJ Delve spins wax! If you didn’t know you probably don’t even buy wax. Serato is needed for tracks that never get pressed on wax like the Lightsleepers Narco posse cut, at the same time crates are a biatch to carry. If you got it on Serato you better have the wax at home (unless its krumping music).
-Lancifer stage light pit pics are a great concept
-Leilow Jules was picking with me before picking was cool and they made tv shows about it. I see him at the collectors joints all the time. Not you! Don’t be a hipster and start collecting cool shit now! Stay on your fixed gear bike or stand up paddleboard and keep it moving.
-Buba and friends reviewing 40s just fits! I still gotta eat a V-Lounge pizza yet!
-Analog Tape Worms trivia fact…..1/8th of those tapes are FROM MY COLLECTION! I didn’t tape trade back then either. 1/48th of them tapes don’t exist. You seen a Woes & O6 album? I try make it happen.
-Sticker ad by Fitted brought back memories of me going T&C Kahala and buying my fingerboard and getting pink and neon green grip tape on it. Still think you shoulda photoshopped a Fitted sticker in there somewhere, but I respect the respect the OG stickers like how you should do on Storto’s door. But I woulda photoshopped it. Man i put a Lightsleepers sticker on an Os Gemeos mural just to take the picture and took it off asap cus I don’t know how to photoshop, but at the same time NO WAY IN HELL WOULD I WANNA DISS THE TWINS! I was scared shitless when I took the sticker off cus I never like peel any paint off (the security guards was nervous too as they came running!).
If I didn’t comment on anytihng it don’t mean I didn’t like it or it’s HAM. Just didn’t comment on it. They make all kine articles for all kine people, sexy beasts to ugly mofos, maybe just not my cup of tea but it could be yours. Best bet is to find a copy and sit on the porcelain thrown and read um.
This mag is like when the nightmarchers start coming and you hear the drums and you gotta get naked and pee in a circle but you can’t pee cus you took a leak five minutes ago and you see the torches coming so you get naked anyways and ball up like a baby and……… I just playing with ya. But imagine how popular my blog would be if I wrote crazy crap like that.
Read the Skate Nazi review of the same issue here and make that pic of jeff bombing hills your wallpaper! Someone should make a poster of that or put it on the APB window like jordy’s stussy ad
Ever have that nervous feeling when you clean yard for your mom guys or your grandma and you wanted to do a good job but didn’t know if they would think you did a good job? Now take that feeling but replace your grandma with the kings and queens of Hawai’i and their families. That’s how I felt when I was invited to help do some yard work at Mauna ‘Ala.
Now I’ve been to Mauna ‘Ala at least seven times in my lifetime, all Kamehameha related because I’m not sure you can just roll up to the spot and visit. But when I got that email requesting help I thought “That’s the least I can do for my ali’i”. I thought it would be a little spooky (strange fact: it’s super quiet there…yeah you hear cars drive by but still more quiet than it should be) but it was kinda nice and peaceful. The graveyard next door is a little creepy, but Mauna ‘Ala was pretty chill. I didn’t take that many pics because I was there for work, not play tourist, but I did take a couple after Kahu Bill Maioho told us the history of the area (read about it here) including how it’s NOT a part of America and it’s so sacred that they rerouted Pali Highway and had to cut into the mountains so it didn’t bother na ali’i! Word.
I wonder if they was looking over my shoulder and saying “what’s that boy doing?”. I had a good time. Great refresher course on Hawaiian history. Mahalo ke ali’i Pauahi no kou lokomaika’i!
Uncle Bill said he only opens the Kalakaua crypt on their birthday celebrations but makes exceptions for school groups and what not. So he opened it so we could visit. I’ve been before, so I was like I no gotta go downstairs…….but I thought about it and Uncle Bill opened it right? Gotta go. Visit your kupuna. Google the crypt key. It’s huge! I never take pics.
If you get a chance to go, stop by and say hello. And no be scared! I’ll be back for sure.
My SDCC recap is coming soon. I gotta get the pics from the other people who took them because my camera is ass.
One thing you upcoming artists/toy designers may or may not have known is that many toy deals between artists and manufactures end with the artists being paid in product instead of getting a percentage of the profits. This has lead to the creation of “AP” toys or artists proofs. Well this is my homie Tracy Tubera’s (Wild Grinders/Fantasy Factory) Radiclaw figure he dropped for SDCC. Only 100 made. Tracy did his rendition of Nakanari’s Spiki in a Wolverine theme. Well I didn’t get to visit the Kuso Vinyl booth where this was being released, but luckily Tracy released his AP’s in his online store. The figure also comes with a matching limited editon print (only 50 prints made). I ordered mine. Get yours too! Support artists! Available at http://www.tracytuberaart.bigcartel.com/
